Choosing a Roof screening Solution

Municipal codes will often require rooftop HVAC equipment to be screened from view. Most popular methods of achieving this are through the use of parapet walls, post
mounted screening, or unit attached screening.

 

The traditional way to screen rooftop equipment is through parapet walls. This option is extremely durable, weather resistant, and can help to add a degree of fall protection to the roof’s edge. Out of all three screening methods, parapet walls are the most expensive and difficult to install, requiring major construction. If parapet walls are not installed high enough to shield the units from view, post mounted or unit attached screening will be required as well as adding additional costs to the project.

 

Post mounted screening is best used for projects with multiple HVAC units either of various sizes or a spread-out layout. This system will require the roof membrane to be punctured to add steel posts to support the screening system. Each of these penetrations will require regular upkeep of waterproofing. If this is not maintained, each of the posts has the potential to lead to a leaky roof.

 

Unit attached screening offers the least invasive way to screen HVAC units. The system’s supports attach to the corners of the HVAC cabinet, avoiding disturbing the roof membrane. These systems can be installed much faster than parapet walls or post mounted systems, helping your project meet code requirements fast. Panels are able to slide to provide easy maintenance access to the equipment. Multiple units can be screened with one unit attached nested system if the units are of similar height, not on vibration curbs, and 96” apart maximum.

 

When evaluating rooftop HVAC screening options, unit-attached screens offer a compelling combination of benefits. They install quickly, require less coordination, maintain easy access to equipment, and most importantly avoid additional roof penetrations that can complicate roofing systems over time.
