Commercial canopies and awnings contribute to the building’s appearance, improve the
end user experience, and can impact long-term maintenance. Early planning and
coordination are critical to ensuring the system performs as intended and integrates
smoothly with the building envelope and construction schedule.
Popular material choices for commercial canopies and awnings including aluminum,
steel, fabric, glass, copper, or fiberglass. Some of these options are initially cost-effective,
however they will require more long-term maintenance than others.
Aluminum is the most commonly specified canopy material because it complements a
wide range of architectural styles and delivers strong long-term performance. It resists
rust, requires minimal maintenance, and, when powder-coated it retains its color well
under prolonged UV exposure. Metal canopies can withstand greater wind and snow loads than fabric systems. Aluminum canopies also provide better impact resistance than steel,
helping reduce hail damage.
Canopy attachment should be considered in the early phases of design. Most systems use
3/8” to 5/8” anchors, such as blind bolts, through-bolts, concrete anchors, or lag bolts,
depending on the wall construction and blocking. Building Façade type also matters as
penetrations can affect warranties and moisture control. Mounting blocks or planned
openings in the façade help protect finishes. All wall penetrations will need to be fully
sealed prior to the canopy installation.
Choose the blocking method early to avoid redesigns, scope changes, and scheduling
issues. Horizontal steel tube at anchor points is typically the best option. Channel and
angle can also work, but they allow less tolerance for construction variation. Vertical tube,
channel, or angle may be used, but they increase the risk of misalignment with plan
locations.
For hollow CMU walls, fully grouting the cells at anchor points can support concrete
anchors, though chemical anchors may still be needed in some cases. Lumber blocking
can be used in a similar manner but the best use case is smaller canopies and areas with
lighter snow and wind loads.
Canopy design should account for construction sequencing. Traditional thru-bolt
attachments are reliable, but they require interior and exterior access—meaning bolts
must be installed before interior walls are finished, often before the façade is complete.
This can make canopy installation inefficient and require multiple crew mobilizations.
Blind bolts offer more flexibility by allowing canopies to be installed independently of
interior fit-out schedules. Fewer mobilizations mean a smoother process, smaller pay
apps, and ultimately, a happier owner.
Commercial canopies are typically supplied either as kits that require on-site assembly or
as prefabricated units. Prefabricated options can streamline installation by arriving as
complete or nearly complete assemblies that mount directly to the building’s prepared supports. Prefabricated systems can help avoid delays during the final phases of the
project and support a smoother path to completion.
Successful canopy and awning design goes beyond aesthetics. Material selection,
attachment methods, blocking, sequencing, and installation should all be considered
early in the design phase. Addressing these considerations ahead of time can improve
efficiency and deliver a better outcome for both the contractor and the owner.
